I joined the New Constructivists Group in 2004, having previously completed a final year thesis analysing developments in constructivism.
My interest and involvement in constructivism stems from the theoretical and technical innovations of Russian avant-gardists from around 1920, most notably El Lissitsky, through to the post-second world war ‘constructionists’ associated with Charles Biederman.
Current work includes paintings on canvas and board, printing on glass, together with wood, plastic, glass and metal reliefs, mainly linear in form.
Both the paintings and printing on glass involve geometric ordering and the predominance of empty space. Reference points include the De Stijl movement and the linear structures of the Argentinian artist Carlos Cairoli.
The glass and wood reliefs comprise solid-shaped blocks and lines suggesting architectural plans and a concern with negative space. Architectural elements are also employed in the paintings on board.
